Continuing our popular ‘Ten Reasons to Love’ series, we take a closer look at the charming and popular city of St Albans.
Vast Roman history, countless cobbled streets and independent shops nestled down alleyways; St Albans has a lot of hidden gems only adding to it’s character! If you’re considering a move to this location or simply an afternoon of relaxation, St Albans has a lot to offer.
1. St Albans Cathedral and Abbey
Both the Cathedral and Abbey are free of entry and rich in culture, what’s a better way to spend your afternoon than having a wander around this renowned building. Not only does the Cathedral have a selection of regular events to attend and choir practice to observe, there is no shortage of impressive architecture!
2. Verulamium Park
It is set in 100 acres of beautiful parkland close to the city center and is a popular attraction throughout the year. The perfect dog walk, teenage hang out spot and children’s play area – and if this park couldn’t get any better, Westminster Lodge is right around the corner! This is the idyllic setting to escape the hustle and bustle of the city.
3. St Albans Clock Tower
Although temporarily closed, the Clock Tower is open 10.30-17.00 every weekend and bank holiday with an entry fee of just £2! The tower and 600-year-old bell still stands, with breathtaking views over St Albans and the surrounding countryside. This is definitely an attraction to visit!
4. Mosaic, Museum and Gallery
St Albans embraces its historic roots, if you’re looking to see some priceless artifacts then head down to the Mosaic and Hypocaust, located in Verulamium Park. As well as this, St Albans Museum and Gallery showcase some local relics and contemporary artworks for all to enjoy.
5. Transport links
With two train stations, St Albans City and Abbey, there are multiple ways to commute directly into London. St Albans City travels to St Pancras International for just £14.50 during peak time and roughly takes 21 minutes. St Albans Abbey is a similar time and price but stops at Euston. Along with countless bus routes, this vibrant city is the perfect location.
6. Schools
St Albans has always been known for their standard of education. With the top secondary schools reaching consistent Outstanding Ofsted reports, this is an area for your child to thrive. Whether you’re looking for single sex schools, high schools, grammar, private or religious – there is always something for everyone!
7. Independent and chain establishments
With a mixture of staple chains such as Pizza Express, Wagamama’s and Five Guys, there is also a large number of independent places to wine and dine! Ayo’s, Alloro and The Waffle House – to name a few! Whether you’re looking for a night out on the town, hopping from pub to bar until the early hours, or a mellow dinner with loved ones – there is always something to quench your hunger!
8. Market day
St Albans Market and the monthly Farmers Market offers an eclectic mix of fresh produce and diverse artisan goods with such an atmosphere to shop. Stock up every Wednesday and Saturday with some lovely gifts, essentials and treats for yourself to enjoy!
9. Sopwell House
Sopwell House remains the hidden sanctuary for those seeking comfort and refinement. Enriched in history, this perfect venue hosts weddings, functions, and parties with a variety of menus and packages to choose from. However, if you’re looking to unwind then explore the spa and treatments available.
10. The Maltings
The Maltings was initially used to turn grain into malt, ready for beer production, and decades later has adapted into a popular shopping destination with several independent coffee places.
