Ten Reasons to Love Berkhamsted

Continuing our popular ‘Ten Reasons to Love’ series, we take a closer look at the charming and popular town of Berkhamsted.

Historically an important market town with strong royal and literary connections, today Berkhamsted is a vibrant residential and cultural centre offering plenty to see and enjoy. In fact, this historic Hertfordshire market town has been named one of the best places to live in the South-East and it’s not hard to see why...

1. High Street

Nestled in the rolling hills of Hertfordshire, Berkhamsted is well known for its pretty high street and with its independent shops, burgeoning café culture, cobbled streets and half-timbered buildings, it’s hard to think of a better place to while away an afternoon.

The high street strikes a perfect balance of independent businesses and known fashion brands; from Mint Velvet and Waterstones to the Mad Squirrel Tap and Bottle Shop – perfect for the local craft beer lovers!

2. Bars, Pubs and Restaurants

Whether you’re looking for a quick drink at the local pub, a celebratory meal or a night out in a cocktail bar – Berkhamsted has something for everyone. With some of its pubs dating back to the 16th century, the old architecture adds to the charm of this town along with modern twists.

Berkhamsted's restaurant scene caters to every cuisine! Chinese, Indian, Greek, Italian, Asian – there are a number of highly rated places to satisfy your hunger.

3. Movies in style: The Rex Cinema

The Rex Cinema opened in 1938, designed in the art deco style. After 50 years of service, it closed in 1988 and was left virtually derelict. Threat of demolition encouraged action and after planning permission and a revamp, it reopened in 2004 and now sells out almost every night!

Screening a mixture of classic and blockbuster movies, it continues to thrive and is the perfect date night location in Berkhamsted.

4. Berkhamsted Castle

Explore 950 years of history by visiting the ruins of the once-mighty Berkhamsted Castle, one of England’s oldest motte and bailey castles.

5. Berkhamsted Town Hall

Berkhamsted’s Town Hall dates back to 1859 and has been carefully restored to honour both the old and new, offering the perfect venue for weddings, parties, business meetings and other functions. This listed Victorian building can hold up to 200 people and boasts fireplace features and minstrel’s gallery.

6. The Church of St Peter

The Church of St Peter is a medieval building of historical and architectural interest dating back 800 years. Originally built at the beginning of the 13th century, the Church oversaw key historical events and continues to be a pillar of the Berkhamsted community today.

7. Grand Union Canal

The Grand Union Canal remains the most historical attraction of Berkhamsted, and a visit to the area wouldn’t be complete without a stroll down its beautiful banks, which run through the heart of the town.

Originally completed in 1798 to connect The Thames to Birmingham, this 137-mile stretch linked the industrial centres of the country and was once imperative for trade.

The Canal is now used for fishing, boat hiring and picturesque dog walks. Berkhamsted Canal is a timeless piece of history and adds further to the charm of this quaint town.

8. Countryside Surroundings

Although London is easily accessible, Berkhamsted is encompassed in the beautiful English Countryside with an endless amount of wildlife.

Berkhamsted backs onto the Ashridge Estate, with greenery as far as the eye can see. With 5,000 acres to explore you’ll never run out of dog walks! Whether you enjoy an intense early morning run or a casual afternoon stroll, there is never-ending horizon of countryside to explore.
