Supporting Our Local Heroes: Alzheimer’s Society

As we continue our monthly charity spotlight feature, Supporting Our Local Heroes, we speak to Soraya Brown, about the inspirational work of Alzheimer’s Society.

Based in North West Hertfordshire, the Alzheimer’s Society hopes, by raising awareness, to help reduce the stigma surrounding dementia and to provide advice, support and crucially hope to all those affected.

Soraya Bowen, Alzheimer’s Society Community Fundraiser for Hertfordshire, tells us more…

“Too many face dementia alone. Alzheimer’s Society is a vital source of support for 900,000 people living with dementia in the UK, more than 15,900 people are estimated to be living with the condition across Hertfordshire.

“We provide people affected with practical advice, emotional support and guidance for the best next steps, during some of the hardest and most frightening times, to improve their lives and help to avoid crisis.

“But our work goes much further than providing help. We aim to provide hope, by working together with people affected by dementia, leading scientists and policy makers, to push for cutting edge breakthroughs and societal change that’ll help people living with dementia and their carers to live more fulfilled and less fearful lives, free from stigma and inequality.

“None of this would be possible without the fundraising we receive from our fantastic supporters, whether individuals, community groups or businesses, many who go above and beyond to help raise money to ensure we can be there for anyone who needs us. For every £10 donated to Alzheimer’s Society, could help someone gets the support they need by providing their first telephone conversation with one of our expert dementia advisers. For every £30 we receive, can help us to provide a family recently diagnosed with dementia to have a face-to-face visit from one of our dementia support workers.

“Last year our services were used over 4 million times, proving to be a lifeline for many. When facing dementia, we’re always better together.”

1 in 3 lives will be affected by dementia in the future. To find out more about the incredible work of Alzheimer’s Society, visit www.alzheimers.org.uk or contact the team here.
