For Life’s Great Causes – Meet the Charities

We’re giving away £10,000 For Life’s Great Causes, and there’s less than one week to go before the poll closes. The top three charities as voted for by you will win a share of the money. Read below to find out more about some of the local charities that have made the shortlist.

Herts Young Homeless

Herts Young Homeless are a local, Hertfordshire based charity providing free services across the county to support young, vulnerable people who are homeless or at risk of becoming homeless. The lockdown has reminded us how important a place to call home is for everyone.

The OLLIE Foundation

The OLLIE Foundation is a suicide prevention charity based in St Albans and set up in 2016 after the deaths of three young men to suicide - OLLIE stands for One Life Lost Is Enough. We work to create an environment where no young person ever feels that suicide is their only option and we do this by delivering accredited suicide prevention training, offering mental health support to groups and holistic wellbeing support in the form of various creative workshops.

Teens Unite

Teens Unite supports young people fighting cancer to live their best life. The Charity inspires young people to recognise their potential now and, in the future, and empowers them to live every moment to the full. When you're faced with cancer, plenty of people will tell you what you can't do, but Teens Unite shows these young people what they can do.

Macmillan Cancer Support

Macmillan Cancer Support is here to help everyone with cancer live life as fully as they can, providing physical, financial and emotional support. During Covid we have kept our Macmillan nurses in hospitals, homes and hospices around he country. We have been at the other end of the phone when people need advice, information, or just someone to talk to.

Rennie Grove Hospice Care

Rennie Grove Hospice Care provides specialist care and support for adults and children living with a life limiting illness across Buckinghamshire and Hertfordshire through its unique services. The care is provided at no cost to patients and families and it is only made possible by the generous donations received from the local community.

The Willow Foundation

Willow is the only national charity working with seriously ill young adults aged 16 to 40 to fulfil uplifting and unforgettable Special Days. Since 1999 Willow has fulfilled more than 17,000 Special Days for young adults living with life-threatening conditions such as cancer, motor neurone disease, cystic fibrosis, muscular dystrophy, Huntington’s disease and many more.

East and North Hertfordshire Hospitals’ Charity

East and North Hertfordshire Hospitals’ Charity supports East and North Herts NHS Trust and its wonderful staff to provide exceptional care to patients and their families. Our hard-working hospital staff are really going above and beyond to get us all through the current pandemic.

The Hospice of St Francis

The Hospice of St Francis supports over 2,000 local men, women and children every year. Our free care for people managing, or recovering from, serious illness has many forms. We ‘give life back’ by improving symptoms and helping people to achieve personal goals, whilst for others we make the end of life the best it can be. We’re also here for loved ones and children affected by loss, helping them to rebuild their lives and live through their grief.

Herts Domestic Abuse Helpline

Our aim is to eliminate domestic abuse through awareness and education, and to support those in need across Hertfordshire through our confidential listening and signposting Helpline service. The risk of domestic abuse has intensified since the start of COVID-19, so much so that it is now being described as the ‘Shadow Pandemic’. Calls to our Helpline have increased by 30% since the first lockdown in March 2020.
