Black History Month 2022. Time for Change: Action Not Words

October 1st 2022 marked the beginning of Black History Month, widely regarded as one of the most prominent cultural celebrations of the year, one that strives for equality and inclusion.

Honouring the contributions made to society by people of Black heritage and their communities, Black History Month is a time to educate and enrich the world with the importance of Black history.

Hertfordshire’s Chief Constable Charlie Hall says: "Black History Month (October) not only gives us an opportunity to celebrate the contribution of Black, Asian and minority ethnic communities across the county, but it also enables me to reinforce our determination to tackle racism and race hate crime.

"It is also a time when we reflect on the history of our diverse communities, their key and defining moments, and the different journeys individuals will have been on.  Understanding the past helps us to shape and define a more just and equitable future.”

If you would like to show your support, here’s a list of fantastic charities to donate to or volunteer with this Black History Month and beyond:

There are also a number of events taking place in Hertfordshire over the next month celebrating Black History Month which can be found on the official website here.

Black History Month is a chance to take action and act upon the idea of 'see something, say something'. We firmly believe here at Ashtons that we must all play a pivotal role in breaking down racism and making our communities a better place to live. Black History Month is an opportunity to learn about and celebrate history but also look toward a better future.
